Stealthy Golf R

GREAT! I love that I cannot see this thing until I need it! The car already sits low in stock form, and I have not lowered it. Had I gone to U-Haul and had one of their hitches installed or a Curt, it would have ruined the way the back of the car looks, not to mention all of the cutting and modification required to get it to fit with the mufflers and fascia back there... This is the best! Stealth Hitch will be the only hitch I install from now on! Colin

Great Product

Its sturdy and well built. The installation process was straight forward as well. It may be a bit intimidating at first, but search online for an install video, which can help a lot. My only gripe is that all of the hardware was missing. The box got really beat up, and the plastic bag that the hardware comes in was shredded. I think the hardware bag could be tape inside the hitch assembly tube and would prevent this from happening. But to the their credit, I had a replacement hardware bag two days after I sent an email. Awfully impressive. If I ever need a another hitch, I wont hesitate to get it from Stealth Hitches. I will also recommend them to my car buddies.

Worth every penny!!!

What a quality, well engineered product. Perfect solution for me not wanting to top mount cargo and bikes, and no unattractive bolt on pos hanging from under the rear of my beautiful car. Shipped expeditiously with love. Thanks Stealth Hitches for making me one happy dude. Self install was absolutely a breeze thanks to you Technicolor instructions and my mad skill.

This is your goto hitch solution for the R

I was looking for a way to move the bikes off the roof of my 2019 Golf R and utilize the Kuat Sherpa carrier that we have for the Rogue. There were already several hitches for this specific model on the market, but I was looking for a design that left no visible receiver when not in use. That's why I was excited when Stealth Hitch finally introduced a version just for the R. I purchased the kit with the towball/ tow wiring as well as the 2" receiver. VW advises against towing with the R I know, but the wiring may come in handy one day if I decide to come up with a magnetic license plate and tail light relocate when accessories block the rear. I did the install myself in my driveway. I recommend when you order the hitch, download the pdf install guide and cross-reference your own tool inventory and borrow or order any specialty tools while you wait for delivery. The tool list is accurate. I did the install with no jacking of the vehicle with no problems.I have 4 comments/ additions to the instructions. I have 5 comments/ additions to the instructions: 1) The instructions recommend removing the bumper cover, but not disconnecting the wiring plug (parking sensors). I did disconnect this plug to easily set the bumper cover aside. I had zero issues doing this. 2) Some of the inner fender liner T25 fasteners are quite close to the tire. Either jack up the rear of the car to allow the tires to droop down, or use a T25 1/4" hex bit and adjustable or 1/4" box wrench to remove these. I used a bit and small crescent wrench. 3) If your R has blind spot monitors, you will have to make an unmentioned decision. These are the two black rectangular radars co-mounted to the rear bumper crash bar bolts on the corners. VW oddly created two completely different designs for each side, instead of two mirror-image designs. On the passenger (north america) side, the radar is co-mounted to the crash bar with a bolt that looks like a large bolt (crashbar to body) with a small bolt (radar to crashbar) stuck off the large bolt head. Stealth Hitch supplies new stainless steel high-grade bolts for mounting the new crash bar/ tow bar to the car body. To their credit, it is probably impossible to source new double-size bolts in this spec. So your choice is to zip-tie the passenger radar sensor to the car, or reuse the factory bolts in this location. 4) To trim the rear valance, I found it far easier to disconnect the wiring harness from the bumper cover (as I mentioned before) and place the whole thing on the bench wrapped in a padded moving blanket. Protect the area to be trimmed with masking tape to avoid scratches (I used some leftover Expel TrackWrap). I used a RotoZip tool with a drywall bit to my satisfaction. 5) After final assembly, you will notice that the accessory release lever handle hits a pinch weld on the car body. Confirmed with a fellow VW Vortex member who also installed this unit. The pinch weld is easily clearanced by bending a 1" section down with vice grips or similar pliers. If you do not do this, the locking pin responsible for retaining the hitch accessory will not be fully engaged. After the entire install, I am very happy with its performance. I still feel that it is the very best hitch on the market for this model vehicle. This is a performance vehicle with some utility, but not a truck. I do not want to see any evidence of a hitch when I'm not using it. Stealth Hitch delivers the best in this respect. The trimmed section of valance is invisible from behind unless you put your eye level at literally 6 inches above the street. The tapered spindle with hefty keyway has no jiggle whatsoever- very hefty. My Kuat Sherpa bike rack has a built-in anti-jiggle mechanism, so the entire assembly is solid going down the road. For regular receiver-mount accessories, I recommend installing a key-locking J-bolt hitch pin. It will require drilling an additional 1/2" hole, 1" away from the existing hitchpin hole. Deburr the new hole with a file and prime/ paint any bare metal.
